GCL 2026 Day 8: Firouzja hands Carlsen his first loss of the Season

Alpine APL Pipers and Ganges Grandmasters will play the final of Tech Mahindra Global Chess League Season 4, even though both teams lost their last round. Alireza Firouzja handed Magnus Carlsen his first loss of the season as Triveni Continental Kings beat Alpine APL Pipers 11-6, while Ganges Grandmasters lost 9-7 to PBG Alaskan Knights. However, both teams secured a place in the final. CheQ Mumba Masters beat FYERS American Gambits 11-6 to finish fourth, and the two teams will play each other again for third place. Match 28: Alpine APL Pipers vs Triveni Continental Kings (6-11)

Alireza Firouzja beat Magnus Carlsen for the first time this season, on the top board. Carlsen tried an aggressive attack, but it backfired after he lost a pawn on move 28.

Ganges Grandmasters lost this match, with PBG Alaskan Knights' young players leading the win. Abhimanyu Mishra beat Leon Luke Mendonca, using a strong knight move that reminded him of a famous Kasparov game from 1985.

Yagiz Erdogmus won a tense game against Leinier Dominguez, who ran out of time near the end.

Stavroula Tsolakidou got the only win for Ganges Grandmasters, beating Nino Batsiashvili.

CheQ Mumba Masters won this match easily and finished fourth overall. Pranesh M, Carissa Yip, and Bardiya Daneshvar all won their games. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave lost his game to Javokhir Sindarov.

The only win for his team came from Javokhir Sindarov.

If Nihal had won his game against Pranesh, FYERS American Gambits would have made it to the final. Sadly, that chance slipped away.

Nihal looked visibly disappointed after the loss.
