Novendra Priasmoro wins 14th Penang Heritage City Open 2022, Muthaiah third

Both GM Novendra Priasmoro and GM Vitaly Sivuk scored 7.5/9 each. The Indonesian GM Novendra won 14th Penang Heritage City Open 2022 due to better tie-breaks, Sivuk had to settle for the second place. Four players scored sole 6.5/9 each. Out of them, IM FT Muthaiah Al was adjudged third. Novendra and Muthaiah are the only two to remain undefeated among top ten players. The top three prizes were RM 8000, 5000 and 3000 in the Open section. Muthaiah received approx. ₹56103. Indonesia and India claim three each among top ten

Three players each from Indonesia and India finished in the top ten in Open section. 13-year-old FM Yu Tian Poh (MAS) is the youngest finisher among top ten. He scored 6.5/9 to finish at fifth place. The teenager is also top finisher from the host country.

A total of 80 players including 4 GMs and 7 IMs took part in the Open section from 17 countries across the world including Malaysia. The six-day nine-round Swiss league Rating tournament was organized by Penang Chess Association at St. Xavier's Institution, Penang, Malaysia from 19th to 24th December 2022. The time control of the tournament was 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment from move no.1.
